Creating a bespoke humanist ceremony in the breathtaking Orkney Islands goes beyond a mere trend; it is a heartfelt tribute to celebrate life's significant milestones. From weddings to funerals, humanist celebrations offer a powerful way for individuals to express their values and personal stories. Coupled with the stunning landscapes of Orkney, it’s the perfect canvas for your unique celebration.

Understanding Humanist Ceremonies

Humanist ceremonies are non-religious celebrations that emphasize individual values and beliefs. These events are highly personal and reflect the distinct character of those being celebrated. In Orkney, the picturesque scenery and rich cultural heritage provide a distinctive charm for these ceremonies.

Humanist ceremonies can mark various important moments—such as weddings, funerals, and naming ceremonies. With customization at the forefront, you can choose every detail, including the location and content. For instance, you might decide to have a seaside wedding at Inganess Beach or Newark Bay (pictured with dog for scale), where the sound of waves enhances your vows while surrounded by loved ones.

Choosing the Right Celebrant

Selecting the right celebrant is the first crucial step in planning your ceremony. A professional humanist celebrant will navigate you through the process, ensuring the ceremony aligns with your values.

When choosing a celebrant, evaluate their experience and personality. Consider their passion for crafting a personalized ceremony. An excellent way to gauge fit is by meeting in person or via a video call, helping to build rapport, which is vital for a meaningful experience.

I am always happy to have a no obligation chat to see if I'm the right celebrant for you and discuss how your ceremony can look and feel. My availability is active 3 weeks ahead in the calendly app. Feel free to book a meeting.

Personalising Your Ceremony

Personalisation is at the heart of humanist celebrations. I assist you to weave your stories, beliefs, and wishes into the ceremony. Here are some practical ways to make your ceremony uniquely yours:

Storytelling

Include personal anecdotes or stories that enrich the ceremony. Reflect on the moments that have defined your journey—like the first holiday you took together or a shared passion that brought you closer. Sharing specific instances can make connections stronger and create a warm atmosphere for your guests.

Music and Readings

Select music and readings that resonate with you. Choose songs that hold special memories or readings that mirror your beliefs. For instance, a couple might opt for a favorite song from their first dance or a literary piece that represents their shared values. Involving friends or family in readings can also add that personal touch, making them part of the celebration.

Symbolic Acts

Incorporate symbolic acts that represent essential commitments or beliefs. Options might include a sand ceremony, where two different colored sands are blended to signify unity, or echo our Viking ancestors by making your vows on an oathing stone. Each act not only enhances the ceremony visually but also speaks volumes about your shared values.

Selecting the Perfect Location

Orkney is sprinkled with stunning venues, from sandy beaches to lush gardens and ancient sites. The islands' rich history and breathtaking landscapes provide endless inspiration for unique ceremony locations.

Beaches

The pristine beaches of Orkney, like those found on Mainland, South Ronaldsay or Burray, provide a magnificent backdrop for beachside ceremonies. Imagine saying your vows as the waves crash gently nearby, enveloped in the fresh sea breeze.

Historical Sites

Consider hosting your ceremony at one of Orkney's historic sites, such as The Stones of Stenness or the Ring of Brodgar. These locations add depth to your celebration and resonate with the island’s ancient heritage. For instance, exchanging vows at the Ring of Brodgar not only connects you with the past but also enhances the overall significance of the moment.

Gardens

Orkney boasts beautiful gardens, shattering the myth that we have no trees, such as those at Firth, Happy Valley and Kirbister. These serene spots are ideal for outdoor ceremonies, where nature’s beauty complements your special day, offering a tranquil atmosphere for guests.

Indoors

If outdoors isn't your thing there is a wealth of indoor venues that I can recommend based on guest numbers and the vibe you want to create. From rustic barns, traditional hotels to modern, eco-friendly distilleries.

Creating a Thoughtful Ceremony Outline

Once you've decided on the elements you'd like to include, creating a thoughtful ceremony outline is essential. I provide you with a form to draw out your ideas and find out what's important to you. Once I have you're information I create a first draft of your ceremony which we edit together until you are happy that it is uniquely yours. Here's a basic structure to consider:

  • Welcome and Introduction: Begin with a warm welcome to guests, establishing the tone for the ceremony.

  • Readings and Music: Weave your chosen music and readings into the ceremony to enhance emotional connections.

  • Personal Vows or Commitments: This is a moment to share heartfelt promises, echoing the importance of your union.

  • Symbolic Acts: Designate time for any significant acts you’ve decided upon to reinforce your commitment.

  • Closing Remarks: Conclude with well wishes and positive sentiments to leave a lasting impression on your guests.

Legal Considerations

Understanding the legalities of Humanist ceremonies in Orkney is crucial. Unlike the rest of the UK, Humanist ceremonies in Scotland have been legally binding since 2005 and same sex marriages have been legally recognised in Scotland since 2014. If you are planning a wedding and coming from England, Wales or Northern Ireland you don’t need to do anything in your home country, your ceremony in Scotland is recognised throughout the UK.

I'll guide you through the paperwork which you submit electronically from 3 months to 29 days before your marriage and you will return home legally married!

Celebrating Your Journey

Crafting a bespoke humanist ceremony in Orkney is an enriching way to honour life's meaningful moments. By centering on personalisation and embracing the stunning landscapes, you can create a celebration that authentically reflects your values and beliefs.

With the right celebrant and careful planning, your humanist ceremony can evolve into a unique experience that deeply resonates with you and your loved ones. Celebrate your journey in the beautiful Orkney Islands and create lasting memories that you will cherish. Embrace this opportunity to let your creativity shine!
